African Reading Glasses Charity Donation Campaign - Malawi's Voice

African Reading Glasses Charity Donation Campaign - Malawi's Voice

 My name is Michael Masika

I am the national eye care coordinator in Malawi

Malawi as a country in sub–Saharan Africa has 1% of the population are blind.

Out of that 1% which is blind. 50% of that is due to cataract.

And we do have 314,000 people who are visually impaired and need glasses and half of them need glasses for reading presbyopia 40 years and above.

Now the services in Malawi, in the Government hospital are free. Which means people don't pay anything but Malawi as a country, we don't provide glasses because we don't have the glasses to provide to the people so we rely on people giving us glasses for presbyopia for readings.

Most of these people the numbers that they use in reading is from +1 to +2.5 Diopter Sphere both eyes.

Not only these people, even the people that we have operated, the 50% I mentioned of cataract. They will need glasses for reading and not only reading but also doing other works like knitting, they will need glasses. So any organization will give us reading glasses, as a government, we will really appreciate that.
