Phernell Walker To Lead American Board of Opticianry

The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Board of Directors announced the appointment of Phernell Walker, MBA, ABOM, LDO, as Chairperson of the Board, marking a significant and historic milestone in the organization’s leadership. Mr. Walker brings decades of experience and service to the ABO’s mission. He has played a key role in exam development and in shaping the strategic direction of the profession.


With more than 30 years as a Master Optician, Mr. Walker is internationally recognized for his leadership and expertise. He is a multiple award‑winning speaker and author of Pure Optics, now in its third edition. In his current role as Vice President of Optometric Relations at VSP Eyefinity, he strengthens collaboration across the eye‑care continuum, including opticians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists.

His expertise, credibility, and vision make him the ideal leader for ABO’s next chapter.”


Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, Mr. Walker earned his MBA with honors from Marylhurst University (Portland, OR), a Master in Ophthalmic Optics, and an associate degree in Opticianry from Hillsborough College (Tampa, FL). He is also a Licensed Dispensing Optician in Washington state.

Since 1947, the American Board of Opticianry has advanced consistent competency standards in opticianry. Together with the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE), ABO provides a unified national credentialing pathway for spectacle and contact lens professionals. ABO & NCLE certifications are recognized by state licensing boards nationwide, supporting approximately 76,000 practicing opticians and promoting the highest standards of patient care.
